U.S. citizens, including all children, need a valid U.S. passport book or a passport card to enter Baja California. They must also obtain an entry permit upon their arrival. If driving to Mexico, you’ll also need to show proof of current vehicle registration. However, you won’t need a temporary import permit for your car if you plan to remain on the Baja Peninsula.

What Documents Do I Need To Fly To Baja California?

If you’re traveling to Baja California by plane, you’ll need a passport book since you’re flying into Mexico. When passing through Mexico’s Customs and Immigration checkpoint, they’ll also ask you to fill out an entry permit.

Make sure your passport is current and won’t expire while you’re on vacation. If it does, you could have trouble reentering the U.S. However, unlike in many other countries, your passport doesn’t need to be valid for 6 months after entering Mexico.

Only certain travelers are exempt from showing a U.S. passport when flying to Mexico. For example, active-duty military with the U.S. Armed Forces who are U.S. citizens possessing a military ID and travel orders.

Do You Need A Passport To Drive To Baja California?

If you’re getting to Mexico by land, you need quite a few more bits of paperwork with you if you drive. You need a passport book or card, along with other vital documents, to enter Mexico by car. You will ultimately slow down lines and waste your time if you don't have your passport.

The Mexican government won’t let U.S. citizens across the border without a valid passport. You will also need an entry permit (Forma Migratoria Multiple or FMM) if you plan to go further than 12 miles past the border.

The Instituto Nacional de Migración (National Migration Institute/INM) issues this permit. It’s your responsibility to go to a National Migration Institute office to get your entry permit.

Save Time Entering Mexico With A Ready Lane

With a U.S. passport card, you can save a lot of time if you’re entering Mexico by land, whether in a car or on foot. There are Ready Lanes that can read the passport card thanks to Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tech in the card.

Driving To Mexico? Do You Need Your Vehicle Registration?

In addition to your passport card or passport book, you also need proper vehicle documents when driving into Mexico. Be prepared to show your current vehicle registration. Mexican authorities might confiscate your vehicle if you have an expired registration.

If you plan to stay on the Baja peninsula, you won’t need a temporary import permit for your vehicle. However, you will need one if your travel plans include going beyond Baja California. You can get a temporary import permit online, at the border, or specific Mexican consulates in the United States.

Typically you pay a deposit for the permit upfront. You get the money back when you cancel the permit after leaving Mexico. You also need proof of proper insurance to drive in Mexico (yes, you need special insurance) and a current driver’s license. If you finance your vehicle, you also need to show a permission letter from your lender.

Tijuana is the largest city in Baja California, and one of Mexico's largest border crossings. If you go there without a passport, the Mexican government can deny entry. However, if you lose your passport while in Tijuana, you can still reenter the United States.

You would need to have an enhanced driver’s license (EDL) or Trusted Traveler Card. If you’re worried about losing your passport, apply for one of these options ahead of time. It could give you peace of mind (and a backup plan).

Although there are no current restrictions on entering Mexico, the U.S. Department of State has issued a travel advisory. They recommend reconsidering travel to Baja California, because of high instances of crime and kidnapping.

Also, the current threat level for COVID-19 in Mexico is Level 3, which is high. The CDC recommends unvaccinated visitors not travel to Mexico.

Do You Need To Get A Vaccine To Go To Baja California?

Mexico doesn’t require a negative COVID test or a vaccine to enter the country. However, the CDC recommends that all visitors to Mexico get vaccinated due to the country's high level of COVID cases.

If you’re a non-U.S. citizen and nonimmigrant, you must show proof of COVID vaccination before reentering the United States.

Does A Child Need A Passport To Go To Baja California?

International travelers and U.S. citizens, regardless of age, need a passport to fly to Mexico. Children 16 to 18 entering Mexico on a school or religious group trip could use a birth certificate and a formal trip explanation letter.

If traveling by land or sea, children need a valid passport or passport card. They might also be able to show proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate if they are under 16 years of age.

Do You Need A Visa To Go To Baja California?

If you’re a U.S. citizen with a valid passport, you don’t need a visa to enter Mexico for stays up to 180 days. This rule also applies to citizens from many other countries.

Any foreign visitor with a valid visa or permanent resident card from specific countries does not need a Mexican visa. These countries include the United States, the United Kingdom, the Schengen Area, Canada, and Japan.

However, they must be traveling for business or tourism or en route through Mexico to another destination. Visitors with a valid permanent resident card from Chile, Colombia, or Peru are also exempt from obtaining a Mexican visa.

You don't need a passport if you’re on a closed-loop cruise (meaning you depart and return to the same U.S. port). However, you will need a driver’s license and birth certificate to verify your identity.

But, the best recommendation is to bring your passport anyway. Not only do you have a backup plan, but you’re prepared for potential emergencies.
