Located in Lawerence County is Spearfish Canyon, one of the many natural attractions in South Dakota. Located in the Black Hills, it is home to many plant species. You’ll find that it is home to turkeys, bald eagles, woodpeckers, and blue jays. If you’re an animal lover, you’ll also find deer, raccoons, squirrels, and plenty of chipmunks. If you’re looking for outdoor adventure, Spearfish Canyon is home to many wildlife and is perfect for outdoor exercise.

2. Spearfish City Park

If you’re looking for a kid-friendly activity, take your kids out for a day at the park. It is one of the highlighted areas of the Spearfish community. Here you’ll find several picnic areas if you want to bring your lunch. They have a large playground for the kids, a community bandshell, and other amenities if you’re looking for outdoor recreation. One added natural attraction that you’ll find at this park is Spearfish Creek. Visitors have enjoyed bringing their kids to this park to blow off some steam.

3. Devils Bathtub Trailhead

If you’re looking for a quick trail to hike, Devils Bathtub is the perfect trail for you. You can hike this train in an hour or stretch it out longer, depending on your hiking experience. While hiking, you’ll be crossing the Spearfish stream many times. If you have young kids, we suggest leaving them out of this activity as it may be challenging in wet conditions.

The total of this hike will be one mile. Make sure you bring enough food and water to keep your energy up. The main thing that visitors seem to love is that at the end of the hike they can jump in the water to cool off.

4. Bridal Veil Falls

Bridal Veil Falls flows about sixty feet and is one of the most accessible falls in the canyon. Bridal Veil Falls flows in the spring and slows down in the summer and fall. Next to the falls is a convenient parking lot so you don’t have to travel too far. If you want to spend the day sightseeing, you’ll be able to utilize their observation platform for viewing and photo taking. One downside to the Falls is that hiking is prohibited in this area, but you’ll still be able to take plenty of photos. 

On your drive to Bridal Veil Falls, you’ll be able to see Roughlock Falls and Spearfish Falls. Based on reviews, visitors have taken gorgeous photos in this area. If you want to take wedding photos, you can’t pass up this spot! Many locals and visitors have taken their wedding photos here.

5. Spearfish Clock Tower

If you’re into history, you’ll want to check out the Spearfish Clock Tower in town. On top of the clock tower, you’ll see the infamous Termesphere. This globe was hand-painted by Dick Termes on what his perspective of Spearfish truly was. If you want to view the clock tower and are on a time crunch, don’t worry, the tower can be viewed any time of day. 
Visitors love coming to this area to view the hand-painted globe on the top of the clock.

6. Roughlock Falls

Roughlock Falls is one of the most popular falls in South Dakota. It is located just beyond Spearfish Canyon. The trail is rated as easily hiked, is two miles in length, and has an elevation of five thousand feet. The trail is located one mile from the Falls and has plenty of breathtaking views. If you plan on a day of hiking, you’ll want to check this one out. You’ll also be able to see the famous American Dipper, a bird that can swim and walk underwater. 

Based on reviews, spring and summer seem to be the best time to hike the trail. There are picnics and restrooms available and the waterfall is beautiful.

17.  Spearfish Aquatics Center

Spearfish Aquatics Center offers many programs and events, along with a water park during the summer season. The events change monthly, however, if you’re planning to visit during the summer, the water park is exciting all on its own! The water park is two acres and has a 400-gallon dump bucket, lazy river, water slides, adventure walk, climbing wall, swimming lessons, kiddy pool, and splash pad.
