Tasmania is an isolated Island state, just of the south coast of Australia! It’s known for its sprawling wilderness,

A. Popular Destinations in Tasmania?

Hobart

Hobart is the capital of Tasmania and is located on the River Derwent.  It is know for its historic district (Battery Point) complete with colonial cottages.

Salamanca Place is a selection of historic sandstone warehouse which now are home to many galleries & cafes.

Guarding the city is Mount Wellington, a mountain which offers breath taking views aswell as many hiking & cycling trails.

Freycinet National Park

Frycinet National Park is a protected Peninsula complete with mountains, white sandy beaches & many campsites.

Launceston

Launceston is a riverside city in north Tasmania.  Cataract Gorge offers panoramic views, sculpted gardens and many walking trails!
While the vineyards of the Tamar Valley meander northwest along the Tamar River.
The Queen Victoria Museum, hosts a 19th century railway workshop and details Tasmanias history.

Port Arthur

Port Arthur is a colonial village with an infamous past of notorious prisons!

Here you can see ruins of the massive penitentiary, and shell of the “Convict Church” which was built by inmates.

There is also Solitary confinement cells. Any convict who died was buried in the Isle of the Dead just across from Carnarvon Bay.

Apart from colonial prison ruins there is alot of natural wonders in the area such as “Remarkable Cave” which is a
natural oceanside tunnel which passes through a sandstone cliff.

B. Is Tasmania expensive to travel?

Tasmania is not cheap to travel! A budget traveller should budget $50 (USD) per day,

while a mid range traveller should budget $100-120 (USD per day.  

This includes the cost of accommodation, food and transport! 

The Prices in Tasmania are similar to the rest of Australia. In Addition,  to the USA & western Europe, UKFranceGermanyItaly.

The good news is Tasmania is cheaper than New Zealand, for the most part!

E. Is Tasmania safe for tourists?

According to the UK Government & US Government Tasmania and the rest of Australia are  safe country for tourists,

with Crime levels being low.

However, like in any busy area be sure to not carry too much cash and exercise caution in crowded areas such as,

train and bus stations, airports to avoid pickpockets.

F. Do you need a visa to enter Tasmania?

Many countries require an EVisa or Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) to enter Australia.

US Citizens:

According to the US Department of state: 

“You must have a valid U.S. passport and a visa or approved Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) to enter Australia.

Most U.S. passport holders traveling to Australia for tourism or business purposes for less than 90 days can obtain an  (ETA).

The ETA is an electronic label-free visa and can be obtained at the ETA website

UK Citizens:

According to the UK Government:

You need a visa to travel to Australia. British citizens can get the following types of electronic visitor visa:

  • eVisitor visa direct from the Department of Immigration & Border Protection. There is no visa application charge or service fee for this;
  • Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) via your travel agent or airline. There is no visa application charge, but a service fee of A$20 applies

Information on all other types of visa is available from the Department of Immigration & Border Protection,

or from the Australian High Commission in London.

G. When is the Best time to visit Tasmania?

The best time to visit Tasmania is between the months December and February, Australia’s summer season.

Although this is peak tourist season, the temperatures are best for enjoying the outdoors.

Insider Tip:

If you plan on staying longer (3-6 months+) in Australia then you can get cheaper flights during the aussie winter or spring.

(So our summer if your in the northern hemisphere) For example, Flying out between June-October could get you a big saving.
