New York to Washington D.C on Public Transport – New York City is one of the greatest & most iconic cities in the world, filled with skyscrapers such Empire State Building, one world trade center and the Rockefeller centre!

In addition, to it being a melting pot for culture, from Chinatown to Little Italy.

Whereas, Washington D.C is historic home of the US government & politics. From the Iconic White House, to the Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King Memorial and plenty of fine dining Restaurants, Washington D.C is a powerful place to visit.

D.C is also home to captivating Cherry Blossom festival a FREE event which sees hundreds of Cherry blossom trees bloom, this is partnered with one of the best Parades in the USA and a Kite Festival.

Which is the best way of traveling from New York to Washington DC?

From the Table above we evaluated which is the best transport options between New York and Washington DC. Now this all depends on personal preference.

However, from the data it’s clear that the Bus or Train is the cheapest method (If you don’t already own a car). They are also the fastest methods taking approximately 3 hours.

If you just want to head direct to Washington DC, I would purchase an advanced ticket for the train which would skip the Notorious New York City traffic and get you there in good time.

However, If you would like to stop off along the way in cities such as Philadelphia & Baltimore as we did then you should rent a car!

If you would like a simple self guided or guided tour to Washington DC, then you should definitely take a tour.

I recommended the  “Washington, DC by Train from Viator” package, you’ll get access to a self-guided tour which includes train travel to DC, a food court lunch, and a hop-on-hop-off tour of the city.

Why you should visit Washington D.C?

Washington DC is the Capital of the United States and home to many federal buildings & iconic landmarks such as the Whitehouse, Washington Monument and the capitol. In addition, Washington D.C is also home to many iconic museums, war memorials and performing-arts centres, such as the Kennedy Centre.

Insider Tip:

There are lots of parking garages close to the iconic landmarks. A good one is at 600 D St NW close to the Newseum. From there you can walk to most of the major landmarks.

Things to see in Washington D.C:

1. The Newseum

This is a really unique Museum, the idea of the museum is to capture the essence of free speech & expression.

It has a newspaper wall which contains headlines from some of the most iconic events in U.S history such as after 9/11.  Other highlights include, pieces of the Berlin wall and remains of the world trade center!

Head to Capital Grille

After making headlines, head just across the street to The Capital Grille. Here you can find an array of delicious foods: from steaks to seafood, & soups.

2. Walk down to the National Mall

Next take a stroll down the National Mall, a park which stretches a couple of miles  from the Capital Building on the East to Lincoln Memorial on the west.

3. Martin Luther King Memorial

An historic place, close to the World War 2 Memorial. This wall is dedicated to late Martin Luther King. The civil rights leader who “Had a dream!”

4. Washington Monument – The worlds tallest obelisk! 

Check out the Washington Monument, the worlds tallest obelisk which stands at 555 feet tall!

5. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Just a short walk away is the Three Soldiers a Vietnam War memorial. There is also the Memorial Wall which names the soldiers who were killed or missing in action during the Vietnam war from 1959.

6. The Lincoln Memorial

Take a walk up the steps to the famous gigantic statue of honest Abe Lincoln. This is an iconic place but it can get really busy during the afternoon!

7. The White House

Home of the President, head to the Iconic Whitehouse. For the best view take a walk down Pennsylvania Avenue.
