New York City to Miami Road Trip – New York City is one of the greatest & most iconic cities in the world, filled with skyscrapers such Empire State Building, one world trade center and the Rockefeller centre! In addition, to it being a melting pot for culture, from Chinatown to Little Italy.

Whereas Miami is the capital of the Sunshine State, a vibrant paradise in the U.S.A, with beaches from Miami Beach to Biscayne Bay. Nature & Alligators close by, at the everglades. In addition, to it being a treasure trove of culture!

How Many Days does it take to drive from New York to Miami?

If you were to drive directly from New York City to Miami it would take you approximately 19 hours and you would cover a distance of 1,286 miles!

However, this if with out breaks & stops which I believe is the funniest part of the road trip!

I took my road trip below last spring and spent 1-2 days in each city so the whole trip took around 2 weeks and was one of the most memorable experiences of my life!

Of course, feel free to adapt the below Itinerary to what suits you!

How much did the road trip cost from New York to Miami?

The Gas cost, around $200 and then of course there was motels, hotels and food. For the amount of places we visited and the experience we had it was a very cost effective adventure!

This road trip is approximately half the cost of flying & quadruple the adventure!

New York City to Miami Road Trip Itinerary:

1. New York City!

Starting in the vibrant New York City, be sure to spend a few days here and check out a few highlights & iconic landmarks before leaving.

Drive/walk over Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most iconic places in New York City. Either drive straight over or take the subway to Downtown Brooklyn then take a walk over.

2. Philadelphia 

Road Trip Route: New York to Philadelphia Drive: Hop on I-95 S & take the short 1hr 34min drive (94.6 miles) to Philly!

Philadelphia is Pennsylvania’s largest city, famous for it’s rich history, tasty foods and vibrant culture! Historically, Philadelphia was the inception point for the United States of America. Head to the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall to see  where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed!

In addition, Philadelphia is famed that Iconic scene in the Rocky movies where he runs up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art! Philadelphia is also a melting pot for some epic foods such as the mouth watering Philly cheese steak!

Liberty Bell Center

This is a MUST SEE attraction for all Americans! Just opposite Independence Hall, you will discover the Liberty Bell Center located in Independence National Historical Park.

Protected in Glass gazebo, this historical Bell weighs over 2000 pounds and was previously mounted on Independence Hall.

This was used to mark events of great significance such as the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Reading Market Terminal is a Food Market which contains over 80 different food vendors! It’s the perfect place to try some local Philly foods and baked goods. In addition, to a variety of international foods such as Greek, Mexican, Indian and even Thai!

The Venue is located beneath the 1891 train station (a National Historic Landmark!)

Philadelphia Museum of Art – Run up those famous steps from Rocky!! 

After your food has digested, why not take a run up the famous Steps from the iconic scene in the Rocky movies. If your a movie fan you can also check out the Rocky statue..great for a selfie!

After you get to top, be sure to head inside the Museum of Art, which is one of the best in the U.S.A. Here you will find works by Van Gogh, Picasso and many more!

There is also monuments and structures from around the world such as the 16th-century Indian temple hall, a Japanese teahouse and even a 17th-century Chinese Palace hall!

3. Baltimore, Maryland 

Road Trip Route: Next hop onto I-95 S and take the 1 h 40 min (97.4 miles) to Baltimore, Maryland. Baltimore Marylands largest city, it’s colorful, diverse and famed for it’s scenic harbor, with up market crab shacks!

Head to the Inner Harbor:

Alot of Balitmore famed attractions such as the USS Constellation, the National Aquarium and the Maryland Science Centre can be found at the historic inner harbor.

National Aquarium in Baltimore

(One of the best in the country, the National Aquarium houses more than 20,000 animals. Features include, an open pool with stingrays & fish, a Rainforest Replica and a gigantic shark tank!

Check out the “Blacktip Reef” exhibit, a $12.5 million area which models in the indo-pacific reef system. This includes 20 blacktip reef sharks, 60 species of fish, zebra sharks and even a enormous sea turtle weighing 500 pounds named Calypso!

Insider Tip:

The National Aquarium can get very busy on the weekends! Your best bet is to attend on a weekday or before 11AM and after 3P.M on weekends

How much does the National Aquarium Cost?

Adult admissions costs $39.95; admission for children costs $24.95; and entry for seniors costs $34.95. It is open between 9 a.m. to 5pm but it can vary. See their website for further details website

Parking at the National Aquarium is available at nearby garages.

USS Constellation:

Baltimore has attractions such as the Civil War–era warship the USS Constellation, see 15 Epic Maritime Museums: USA Navy!In addition to it’s National Aquarium which showcases thousands of marine creatures.

Federal Hill – FREE

Federal Hill offers arguably the best views of Inner Harbor and the Baltimore Skyline. Historically it was used during the Civil war as a lookout point. For Families, the park offers a playground and when you get hungry there are plenty of restaurants nearby.

How to get to the top of Federal Hill? 

To get to the top of Federal hill you can take the stairs or the rolling hill.

You have two options for getting to Federal Hill’s summit: stairs or rolling hill. For the  stairs, walk up the 100 stairs on the Battery Avenue side.

There is on street parking close by.

4. Washington D.C

The Capital of the United States and home to many federal buildings & iconic landmarks such as the Whitehouse, Washington Monument and the capitol.

In addition, Washington D.C is also home to many iconic museums, war memorials and performing-arts centres, such as the Kennedy Centre.

Parking 

There are lots of parking garages near the iconic landmarks. A good one is at 600 D St NW close to the Newseum. From there you can walk to alot of the major landmarks.

The Newseum

This is a really unique Museum, the idea of the museum is to capture the essence of free speech & expression.

It has a newspaper wall which contains headlines from some of the most iconic events in U.S history such as after 9/11.  Other highlights include, pieces of the Berlin wall and remains of the world trade center!

Hungry? Head to Capital Grille

After making headlines, head just across the street to The Capital Grille. Here you can find an array of delicious foods: from steaks to seafood, & soups.

Walk down to the National Mall

Next take a stroll down the National Mall, a park which stretches a couple of miles  from the Capital Building on the East to Lincoln Memorial on the west.

Washington Monument – The worlds tallest obelisk! 

Check out the Washington Monument, the worlds tallest obelisk which stands at 555 feet tall!

Martin Luther King Memorial

An historic place, close to the World War 2 Memorial. This wall is dedicated to late Martin Luther King. The civil rights leader who “Had a dream!”

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Just a short walk away is the Three Soldiers a Vietnam War memorial. There is also the Memorial Wall which names the soldiers who were killed or missing in action during the Vietnam war from 1959.

The Lincoln Memorial

Take a walk up the steps to the famous gigantic statue of honest Abe Lincoln. This is an iconic place but it can get really busy during the afternoon!

The White House

Home of the President, head to the Iconic Whitehouse. For the best view take a walk down Pennsylvania Avenue.

5. Richmond, Virginia 

Road Trip Route: Hop back on I-95 S and take the 1hour 50 min drive (109 miles) to Richmond, Virginia. 

Richmond, Virginia is one the United States oldest cities and was the capitol of the Confederacy during the civil war.

Although not considered a hot destination to visit, it’s still a nice place to stop for a few hours have some lunch and take in the History.

Church Hill District: 

For some history head to Church Hill District. This is authentic Richmond. Take a walk to the historic streets to St Johns Church where the famous “Give me liberty or death” speech was performed by Patrick Henry.

Stay/Grab Dinner at the Opulent Jefferson Hotel 

The Jefferson Hotel was Built in the mid 19th century and is a beautiful, opulent building in the heart of the downtown.

Tea? 

Feel like royalty by make a reservation for afternoon tea, which is served 3pm to 4:15pm with sandwiches & pastries.

Afterwards, check out the marble statue of the great Thomas Jefferson.

Blue Ridge Parkway:

After visiting Richmond, You can take a detour via the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, one of the 25 Most Epic Driving Roads in the U.S.A

6. Charlotte, North Carolina 

Road Trip Route: Cross the State line and take the big drive to Charlotte in North Carolina.

Head on the I-85 S, for four hours. (293 miles). Option to stop over at Raleigh, NC to chop the road trip in half.

Charlotte, is a beautiful and vibrant city known as the birthplace of NASCAR. It’s also home to the NASCAR Hall of fame Museum.

7. Savannah, Georgia

Road Trip Route: Take the I-77 S and I-95 S, 3 hours 41 mins (253 miles) through South Carolina to Savannah, Georgia.  You have options to stop off at Augusta or Charleston to break up the Journey. 

Savannah, Georgia is one of the original 13 colonies & the oldest city in Georgia! It has the second largest st paddies parade and many Civil War historical sites. However, my favourite thing to do here was to drive through Oak tree lane, a breath taking Instagrammable road!

This will be one the most memorable drives of your life! Meander through oak tree lane and marvel at the live Oak trees.  Which are dripping in Spanish Moss…the native americans called it “Tree hair”.

As you drive off the main road onto oak lane, you will have your breath taken away by this natural wonder!

The speed limit is 15 mph. So drive slow and enjoy the majestic oaks. At the end you, there is a parking lot where you can hop out and take a hike along one of the scenic trails.

Where is Oak Tree Lane in Savannah? 

Oak Tree lane is located just of Wormsloe historic site and is one of the greatest driving roads in the U.S.A

Top Tip:

Try driving oak road at night also, for a spooky drive through the oaks!

Fun Fact: Savannah actually has the second largest St Paddies Day Parade in the U.S.A. So if your here on the 17th March, that will be one to attend!

Fun Fact: Savannah was also the birthplace of the girl scouts found!

This is a place surrounded by theatrical oak trees and colonial estates.

Historic Downtown:

Explore Savannah’s Historic District, wander through beautiful cobblestone streets, check out the rustic mansions, 18th-century rowhouses and historic squares.

Visit Forsyth Park and a 300 year old oak tree! 

Candler Oak Tree is over 300 years old; making it one of he oldest living landmarks in the area! Location: 516 Drayton Street, Savannah, GA 31401. The tree is located adjacent to Forsyth Park

City Market is a bustling area, which offers entertainment, restaurants.

The St. Augustine Wild Reserve in Florida gives visitors a fantastic opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the most exotic animals in the world!

Alot of animal lovers are against zoos, so visiting a place like St Augustine wild reserve is a great alternative and your donations can really make a difference!

Three million lights cause St Augustines historic district to glow for 2 months. The  lights display runs from November 23, 2019, to January 31, 2020. 

Ghost Tour of St Augustine:

This is a great tour for couples & families alike! A story telling guide accompanies you around the city at night and tells you ghoulish, ghostly tails about various landmarks from the old Jail to the Old drug Store.

Many tour companies offer similar tours throughout the city, this ghost tour is the one our family had a great experience with!

9. Orlando, Florida 

If your traveling with a family your definitely going to want to spend a couple of day in Orlando.

From the Iconic Disney World Resort, to Universal Studios and even GatorLand! When we went to Orlando, we chose to head to Universal Studios & Gatorland partly because our kids weren’t really young and partly because we felt Universal Studios kept more people in our group happy!

Universal Studios Orlando:

Universal Studios Florida is an iconic and ever so Awesome theme park in Orlando. Having opening back in 1990, the park has grown from strength to strength & is now world renowned for its movies & TV themed rides. In addition to it’s entertainment shows, areas, shopping and character encounters!

Kennedy Space Centre

If theme parks aren’t your thing head to Kennedy Space Centre.  Located just one small step from Orlando, (reached by car in 1 hour.)

This is probably one of the most iconic attractions in the area. Kennedy Space Centre has been the primary launch centre for NASA human powered flights, since 1968.

Canaveral National Seashore:

While in the area you should also check out Canaveral National Seashore  located on a barrier island around 15 minutes north of Kennedy Space centre.

Insider Tip – Turtle Nesting Season! 

The majority of turtle nesting in Florida occurs between May 1st and October 31st.

Fun Fact: Approximately, 90% of all sea turtle nesting in the United States takes place on Florida’s beaches!

10. Miami 

Road Trip Route: Miami is 3.5hr drive from Orlando by car.

Ocean Drive:

A Drive through Ocean Drive, will really open your eyes to Miamis art deco style and reveal it’s colors. There is also, lots of great places to eat here, family activities and even a vibrant Nightlife along the main strip!

Miami Tours & Miami Zoo.

A popular way to see all the sights of Miami is via a tour , this is a nice way to learn about the city, get your bearing & see all the great spots so you can decide what activities to do on the next few days of your trip.

Miami Zoo, as a large selection of some of the most exotic wildlife in the world! It also hosts a variety of fun packed & interesting activities & animal exhibits.

You can explore the zoo on foot alone, take a guided tour and even a comfortable driving tour over the 750 acres of land!

Fairchild Botanical Gardens:

If you don’t fancy the zoo, then why not head down to Fairchild Botanical Gardens, for a relaxing stroll through the lush greenery.

Miami Museum of Science:

Another educating option is the check out Miami Museum of Science, which can also easily take up an entire day!

At the Museum, you can experience a variety of exhibits, interactive props and exciting demonstrations. There is even a wildlife section & Planetarium.

Miami Beach & Seaquarium

After an epic Road trip from New York City!  It’s nice to relax on Miami Beach and watch the sunset!

The wide beaches run from North Shore Open Space Park, through palm fringed Lummus Park, all the way to South Pointe Park.

South Beach – Is one of the most Iconic parts, popular with models, movie stars and celebrities. A great place to check out.

Extend your Road Trip to Florida Keys:

A road trip from Miami to Key West, is one of the most scenic and breathtaking driving routes in America! 

It will take you over the famous overseas Highway 1, and meander through over 40 islands before reaching Key west.

The journey is around 1hr 15 mins to Key Largo from Miami then another 4 hours along highway 1 to Key west.

I would recommend, staying on the islands for a few days as the areas spans over 100 miles so plenty to explore.

Each city above we spent between 1-2 days so the total trip was around 20 days. But can adapt this to your time, budget and what you wish to see in each city!
