The United States is the home to some epic Music Festivals, from Coachella to Lollapalooza and of course Burning Man!

There is something for everything at the U.S music festivals, whether your into Rock, pop, reggae, hip hop, Country or electronic!

In this U.S Music Festival guide, our resident raver Scarlet at Town & Tourist will outline the top 20 and even include a U.S music festival road trip map and quiz to help you choose which one is right for you!

21. Coachella – California

Starting our list of with one of the most high demand and trendy Music Festivals in the U.S.A. Coachella attracts the biggest stars in Hip Hop, Rock, Pop and Electronic.

The festivals first edition was in 1999, where Rage against the Machine played to 37,000 people. Since then the likes of Drake, Oasis, Beastie Boys, Radiohead, Jay Z, Beyonce, ACDC, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and many more have played. The crowd in 2019 reached over 250,000 thousand!

Since it’s inception Coachella has become a Music & Arts festival, and has attracted a number of celebrities.

How much does Coachella Cost?

Coachella tickets cost $429 for general admission for the weekend, but how much Coachella really costs depends on the experience you want!

The Next edition is on 10-12 & 17-19 April 2020.

The EDC Las Vegas music festival, has a vast spectrum of art installations through the festival to create a supernatural world worth diving into. From glow in the dark landmarks to 3D superstructures, you will have your imagination whipped up while at EDC.

Carnival Rides & Performers: 

Of course, you will spot a few ferris wheels & fairground attractions it is a Carnival after all. Keep your eyes peeled as a variety of wacky performers from dancers & stilt walkers to aerial circus performers keep you engaged & entertaining in the fun atmosphere.

Line Up:

The Line up at EDC winter music festival includes many popular EDM artists, such as Axwell, Alesso, Dillon Francis. Others include Chainsmokers, 4B and even A$AP Rocky.

Insider Tip: If your not into big crowds or mainstream EDM, then perhaps give this one a miss. But if you would like an immersive  fun packed, carnival style EDM festival…this is for you.

19. New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

For a real Classic Jazz festival there is no better festival than New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The festival first started back in the 1970’s and has hosted some great names over the years.

Last years (2019) line up saw, The Rolling Stones, Katie Perry, Van Morrison, Earth Wind & Fire and even Jimmy Buffet and the Coral Reefer Band!

Is it just Jazz?

As you can see from the line up above, the festival has expanded into more genres but tries to keep a focus on the music & culture of New Orleans & Louisiana. Such as: Blues, Gospel, R&B, Afro Cairbbean, Folk, Latin, Rock, Country, Blue Grass and of course Jazz!

It does not usually sell out completely so you can get tickets, however nearby hotels usually sell out way in advance.

How much do Tickets cost?

Jazz Fest advance tickets cost $70 till Feb 1st.  Then, the price rises to $75.  Jazz Fest daily tickets purchased at the gate cost $85 for adults, $5 for children ages 2 to 10.

18. Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival – TN

Bonnaroo, was originally a festival which focused on folk rock and jam bands. However, it has now since expanded into a large array of genres from Rock to Hip Hop, Metal, Jazz, Gospel and Reggae.

Last Years line up (2019) included Post Malone, Cardi B, ODESZA, Phish, Solange Lumineers.

17. Electric Forest – Michigan 

Electric Forest    was originally called Rothbury Festival when it began in 2008 and was focused mainly on jam bands & rock bands. Since then however, the festival has expanded majorly into Electronic Music over two weekends.

Each Weekend in late June, electronic DJ’s take over the forest for a colorful, electronic experience.

Past Line ups (2019) have included: KYGO, Zeds Dead, Gorgon city, ODESZA , Alison Wonderland, Gramatik

16. Stagecoach – California 

Stagecoach is California Premier Country Music Festival! Last years event attracted over 80,000 visitors and the fun packed festival is expected to grow. Last years (2019) headliners included Garth Brooks and Keith Urban.

Popular attractions include, carnival rides, a Honkytonk Dance hall, Ferris Wheels and beer barns!

Will it sell Out?

Stagecoach  festival does not usually sell out, but it does draw big crowds so who’s to say what will happen in the future.

15. Hot 97 Summer Jam – New Jersey

Hot 97 Summer Jam  is one of the best Hip Hop Festivals in the U.S.A!  Having running it’s first edition in 2008, Hot 97 Jam has been a platform for the freshest names in Hip Hop!

A Unique Music Festival in the U.S.A, Dirtybird campout is an adult summer camp with a twist.

13. Pitchfork Music Festival – Chicago 

Pitchfork Music Festival  is musical melting pot of independent rock, Jazz, Punk, hip hop and even electronic music. Last years line up included HAIM, Belle & Sebastian, Clairo, Charli XCX.

Unique attractions here include a Record Fair, and a variety of art, food and beverage vendors which offer local produce.

12. Lollapalooza – Chicago 

One of the most Iconic Music Festivals in the U.S.A. Lollapalooza started as a rock, heavy metal, punk rock music festival combined with a traveling freak show and even some Shaolin monks! Since then the festival has grown to an attendance of over 400,000 people!

Line Up:

Last years line up (2019) included The Strokes, the Chainsmokers, Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, Twenty One Pilots, J Balvin, Ariana Grande, Flume.

Why is it called Lollapalooza? 

Founder and Jane’s Addiction leader Perry Farrell claims to have named the festival Lollapalooza back in 1991 after hearing the word used to describe an exceptional thing, person or event, in a Three Stooges short

11. Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival – CA

Wonderfront Music Festival bring 95+ diverse artists from electronic to Hip Hop, Latin and alternative t0 over 7 waterfront stages in San Diego, California. Last Years line up (2019) included: Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, MGMT, Miguel, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, Don Omar, Slightly Stoopid and Nicky Jam.

10. Electric Zoo – NYC

The clue is in the name, electric zoo is a wild collection of the most epic electronic music artists in the world! Last years line up (2019) included Diplo, Skrillex & Boys Noize, Zedd and Afrojack!

This festival is run by the same people which run, Tomorrowland, Mysterland and Sensation so expect, magical creativity, high productive value and a host of electronic music!

9. Afropunk Festival – NYC

Afropunk is a cultural movement celebrating Black culture, Activism, art and of course music! They call themselves “The other black experience” and attract over 60,000 people each year.

They have a strong message and Fierce  political views for example a previous campaign was called “When are we going to Impeach the Mother F**ker!” referring to Donald Trump!

They also offer some great music, last years line up included: FKA Twigs, Leon Bridges, Lianne La Havas, Jill Scott, Brittany Howard.

Time Warp is a vibrant techno brand which has an annual music fesitval in Mannheim, Germany. But now this Brand has come to New York, and brough the biggest names in House, Techno & electronic music with it.

Last Years line up (2019); Saw the Techno kings & queens such as: Nina Kraviz, Sven Väth, Amelie Lens, Richie Hawtin, Peggy Gou, Maceo Plex, Ricardo Villalobos.

Set out over 8 mammoth stages, this event is an all inclusive occasion with a variety of great music, art markets, food/drink vendors and even a dedicated family area.  As it’s popularity has increased so much, it has been expanded to two weekends.

3. The Governors Ball Music Festival – NYC

2. Underwater Musical Festival – Florida

Definitely the most Unique Festival on our list! The Underwater Music Festival is held annually at Florida keys to raise awareness for the only surviving Coral Reef in the U.S.A, the Looe key reef.

Expect to see a series of wacky costumes from Mermaids, to Sponge Bob. This is a fun packed festival which should be a bucket list experience for most.  ‘Shell we dance”

Special water proof Speakers are immersed underwater and a series of coastal themed music is pumped out. From the Beatles Yellow Submarine, to “Under the sea” from the little mermaid!

At Town & Tourist, this had to be number 1 on our list, a true Icon and cultural extravaganza of art, people, music, creativity and ideas.

Black Rock Desert in Nevada gets transformed every year into an apocalyptic community called Black Rock City.

Black Rock City:

Black Rock city is an improvised desert town, which looks like something out of the Mad Max Movies. Each year this becomes the home to 80,000 wild characters “Burners”, unique art sculptures and some epic music!

Burning mans Philosophy is about connecting people through self expression, and carefree attitudes.
