Do You Need A Passport To Go To Puerto Vallarta? (Find Out Now!)

Well known for its incredible beaches and nightlife, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, is a popular tourist destination. Many people arrive in this resort town by land, air, and sea. Traveling internationally can be complicated, and it can be challenging to understand what documentation is required for entry into Mexico.

Most people entering Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, will require a passport book. Exceptions are made for travelers visiting on a closed-loop cruise. Additional documentation, including an Entry Immigration Form, proof of funds, and proof of return, are required before entering Mexico.

Closed-loop cruises present a rare exception for travelers requiring a government-issued photo ID along with accepted documentation proving U.S. citizenship.

Most people traveling to Puerto Vallarta will not require a visa, and there are no necessary Covid-19 testing procedures before arriving in Mexico. Before returning home to the United States, be sure to receive a negative test result from a Covid-19 viral test.

Generally speaking, all visitors to Puerto Vallarta will need a passport or a passport card. Beginning in 2010, U.S. citizens must present a passport when traveling past the “border zone.” Typically, the “border zone” is denoted as a 20-30 km range on either side of the border. Because Puerto Vallarta is past the zone, a passport is required.

Traveling by air will require a valid passport for adults and children. The passport is valid if travel is within six months of expiration.

If traveling by land or sea, a passport card may be accepted to enter Mexico and return to the United States. Other documentation exceptions may be made for travelers visiting Puerto Vallarta on a closed-loop cruise that starts and ends in the United States.

Every person, regardless of age, must complete the FMM form. A valid passport and contact information are required to complete the form.
  • Proof of Funds Travelers must supply documentation, like a bank statement, to show they have sufficient financial funds. Adequate funds are necessary to cover expenses while visiting Puerto Vallarta.
  • Proof of Return - Acceptable documentation must show that a return flight is scheduled to return home to the United States.

Before arriving in Puerto Vallarta, ensure that all necessary documentation is completed. These forms and documents are necessary to enter Mexico. Failure to produce the required forms or documentation could result in a denied entry.
