Best Luxury Shopping Destinations
The Intersection of Luxury, Fashion, & Entertainment
Even if someone you ask isn’t quite sure exactly where Rodeo Drive(pronounced roh-DAY-oh, not ROW-dee-oh) is located (Beverly Hills, California), you can be sure that just about anyone you ask has at least heard of it and equates it with a luxury shopping destination for the rich and famous (although you are more likely to find tourists than glitterati roaming the streets with shopping bags).
The Rodeo Drive legend is much bigger than the street itself and visitors often marvel at how small the shopping area is. The street stretches from Sunset to Wilshire, but the Holy Grail of Shopping section of Rodeo Drive is only three blocks long.
Via Rodeo, a European-styled shopping concourse that resembles a movie set, sits at Rodeo Drive and Wilshire Boulevard.
Just around the corner from Rodeo on Wilshire, you’ll find department stores such as I. Magnin, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Neiman Marcus. On the streets parallel to Rodeo, you’ll find the same kind of shops that are in any upscale shopping area, a good place to make a purchase and tell your friends at home: “I bought it in Beverly Hills.”
The large hotel at Rodeo Drive and Wilshire is the place where Julia Roberts and Richard Gere found love in the 1991 film, Pretty Woman. The Lobby Bar looks out into Rodeo Drive and serves wine by the glass and an afternoon tea some say is best outside London.
Every Father’s Day, the annual Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance occurs on Rodeo Drive, displaying some of the world’s most expensive automobiles. Travel publisher Frommer’s named it one of the “300 Unmissable Events & Festivals Around the World.”
Whether or not you can afford to shop on Rodeo Drive, if you are visiting the Orange County area, you definitely need to take a day trip for the photo opportunities and just so you can say you’ve been there.
